Ghosts of Old Town Jail and Bannockburn House

Stirling Old Town Jail

The echos of chilling voices can still be heard aswell as creepy whispering by people who venture through the Old Town Jail.  People complain of hearing scratching and tapping whilst others identify ice cold areas where it feels as if they are being gripped by unseen hands. Many people have seen apparitions here even during the day, in the dead of night we feel sure that we will get more than we bargained for. Stirling Old Jail is not for the faint-hearted but we are keen to know who or what resides inside this old building.

Bannockburn House

Many spirits who once lived at Bannockburn House are still said to roam this magnificent and extremely terrifying location, including that of a military man who is reported to tug on visitors’ belongings and the spirit of a child who likes to be very playful. Wrist watches are often known to stop in certain areas of the building.

Swirling mists have been witnessed, blood curdling screams echo around the upper floors and doors have been heard slamming from empty rooms and corridors around this haunted mansion

History of Old Town Jail and Bannockburn House

Stirling Old Town Jail

Once home to some of Stirling’s most infamous criminals and built in the 1840’s, Stirling Old Town Jail quickly became one of Scotland’s harshest of prisons, although not as harsh as the prison it was built to replace, the notorious Tolbooth Gaol. The Old Town Jail dished out the harshest of punishments to its inmates making life hopeless, brutal and completely unbearable. The solitary confinement areas, which were the smallest of cells, sent prisoners mad and many faced an early death.

The separation system was used here along with starvation and brutal labour techniques designed to demoralise and destroy all those who found themselves incarcerated here. The jail was used by the Military for the Scottish Regiment in 1888 but was decommissioned around 1935 and became derelict. The restoration work that has since been carried out has ensured that the history of those that lived and perished here is not forgotten.

Bannockburn House

Hidden away in the Scottish woodland stands a 17th Century Category A listed mansion known as Bannockburn House. One of Scotland’s most haunted buildings.

Believed to have been built on top of a building called Drummond’s Hall, Bannockburn House, as it stands today, was completed in 1675 by Sir Hugh Paterson. The work inside the house was crafted by two highly skilled craftsmen; Houlbert and Dunsterfield who produced ornate ceilings within the mansion.

The mansions most notable guest was Bonnie Prince Charlie who briefly visited and dined with Sir Hugh in September 1745.

After the passing of Sir Hugh, the mansion passed hands to his daughter Mary who then sold the estate to William Ramsay in 1787, later being sold by the Ramsay family in 1883. Bannockburn House has passed hands many times through its life and it now cared for by dedicated volunteers who have thought to have witnessed some terrifying hauntings.
